(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Undersecretaries of the ministries of postal services and information and telecommunications technologies (ITCs) of the GCC member countries met here Monday to discuss ways for upgrading the ICTs sector.
The conferees also discussed the preparations for the GCC states' participation in the coming meeting of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the bids of Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates to join the membership of the ITU board, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Communication Hamid Al-Qattan said.
"We have reviewed the outcome of the ad hoc panels of the ministerial committee, including the recommendations of the 27th meeting of the undersecretaries of the ministries of postal services and information and telecommunications technology particularly those relating to the gulf express - a strategic mail service," he told reporters.
"We have also discussed the implementation of the recommendations of the fifth meeting of the ICT steering committee for speeding up the regulation of the ICT sector and sharing information on information security and the settlement of disputes among internet service providers," Al-Qattan revealed.
The outcome of the current meeting will be tabled to the ministerial meeting, due here on June 11, for endorsement, he added.
Regarding the recently-approved act on launching a communication authority, he said the planned authority will play a regulatory role, not a repressive one.
"The mandate of the authority will focus on arranging and improving the communication services, and standardizing the fairs, thus serving the interests of, and ensuring quality service for, customers," he noted.
Eng. Al-Qattan added that the authority will not infringe on the freedom or privacy of subscribers, expecting that it will take six months to come to existence.
