(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The establishment of the Gulf Cooperation Council was an (GCC) exceptional moment in the history of the Gulf region as the bloc helped retain the member states stability, security and culture.
"It is the most important decision taken by the Gulf States over the past 50 years," Head of the Advisory Board of the GCC Supreme Council Abdullah Bishara told KUNA Sunday on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of the Gulf bloc creation.
"The GCC establishment had great roles in preserving stability, security, culture, traditions and heritage of the Gulf States." Bishara, the first secretary general of GCC 1981-1993, highlighted the active and decisive role by the GCC to put an end to the devastating eight year-long Iranian-Iraqi war, 1980-1988. He added that the GCC stance against the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait in 1990 was very firm.
"The GCC today is not only doing its mission effectively, but also is leading the political scene in the region and outlining Arab stances and promoting moderation," he said.
He went on to say that the GCC establishment was not only important for the Gulf States, but also for the whole Arab region.
The GCC has supported progress and development aspirations of Egyptian, Syrian and other Arab people, he argued.
For his part, Dr. Abdulmohsen Jamal, a member of Advisory Board of the GCC Supreme Council, echoed a similar view.
"The GCC has been playing an outstanding role in unifying Gulf States visions and stances of many issues," Jamal told KUNA.
He recalled the unforgettable stance GCC during the period of the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait in 1990.
Jamal noted that the GCC has recently embarked on ambitious plans and efforts to reach economic integration among its members.
"Though the GCC has not met all Gulf people's aspirations, it is on the right track to achieve that, " he said.
"The GCC has faced a lot of obstacles and crises managed to overcome them, thanks to the wisdom of the Gulf leaders." The Gulf Cooperation Council is a political and economic alliance of six countries: Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman. The GCC was established in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on 25 May 1981. The purpose of the GCC is to achieve unity among its members based on their common objectives and their similar political and cultural identities, which are rooted in Islamic beliefs.
The organizational structure of the GCC consists of the Supreme Council, the Ministerial Council and the Secretariat General. The Secretariat is located in the city of Riyadh.
