(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Hezbollah's chief Hassan Nasrallah on Sunday re-affirmed his policy of upgrading military might of his movement for confronting Israel.

Policy of "deterrence against the enemy is the sole means to protect Lebanon as land, people, entity and resources," said Nasrallah in a televised statement marking the 14th anniversary of liberating South Lebanon.

"In shadow of imbalance of power in favor of the enemy, there is no real strategy but the policy of deterrence," said Nasrallah, apparently reacting to recurring calls by other Lebanese political parties that favor mapping out a new defense strategy where the Lebanese Army take command of the "resistance and defense of Lebanon" in face of Israel.

"The resistance is always seeking to update its resistance capacities," said Nasrallah, affirming reports that Hezbollah upgraded its military arsenal.

The Hezbollah chief warned Israel against carrying out "provocative acts" across the border, alluding to recurring troops' crossing of the border line and other incidents such as a recent attack with a concussion grenade on a Lebanese shepherd. "The resistance will not be reluctant to stop these intrusions," he threatened.

On the internal front, Nasrallah said all political parties "should exert efforts to elect a new president as soon as possible. There is still a chance to elect a strong president, capable to maintain stability with genuine popularity." Term of the president, Michel Suleiman, ended on Saturday and he vacated the presidential palace against the background of differences among the influential parties on choosing a successor. The latter, during last period of his term, publicly criticized Hezbollah for its stance regarding an aspired new defense strategy that gives full command of defending the country to the regular army and for its military intervention in Syria.

Israel, on May 25, 2000, withdrew its military forces from southern Lebanon, except for Shebaa farms, Kfar Shouba hills and a sector of the frontier village, Al-Ghajjar.
