(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Anti-terrorism squads raided Al-Qaeda's hideouts in Arhab some 20 kilometers north of the capital Sanaa killing three members of the group, including Saleh Al-Tais, also known as Abu Yasser, notorious for killing diplomats and security personnel, Yemeni Ministry of Defense said on Sunday.
Three soldiers died in the operation and three Al-Qaeda gunmen surrendered to the raiding force, the statement said. It confirmed that Al-Tais was killed in the operation.
Al-Tais was known as mastermind of assassinating a number of foreign diplomats and Dr. Ahmad Sharaf-Eddine, a member of the national dialogue convention, as well as a number of security personnel and citizens.
Four vehicles that were rigged with explosives and prepared for suicide attacks were destroyed in the raids.
In Sanaa, authorities nabbed three Al-Qaeda activists, who were involved in packing explosives into vehicles for sabotage attacks.
Authorities have been clamping down on Al-Qaeda, seeking to build bases in several regions, particularly in areas of impoverished natives.
