AAP suffers major blow as Shazia Gopinath quit party

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Kejriwal flayed for ?shoot and scoot? politics and ?crony clique? around him

even as its leader arvind kejriwal is in judicial custody till june 6 in a defamation case the aam aadmi party (aap) suffered twin blows on saturday when two of its prominent members shazia ilmi and captain g r gopinath quit the party after voicing their disappointment over recent developments.

ilmi who had lost the recent lok sabha elections to former army chief general v k singh from ghaziabad in uttar pradesh near delhi said she was resigning from the primary membership of aap and all positions she held in it because there was no internal democracy within the party. a former journalist ilmi was one of the founding members of the party along with kejriwal and others and was one of its most prominent spokespersons.

“there is no collective decision making in the party” she told a press conference and wondered if it was enough for the party to keep blaming some politicians and corporate houses for corruption in the country. “i have resigned from aap as i believe that aap could have done a lot and did a lot to change the political discourse in the country. aap has done a lot of mistakes as well and should be excused for it as it is a new party” she said. ilmi said she still had the greatest respect for kejriwal and all her colleagues in aap.

“arvind is a brilliant person who espoused the concept of swaraj and collective decision-making but he’s unable to follow it within the party. i was consistently sidelined in the party” she said.

she said “we fight against cronyism but we have a crony clique which runs the party and takes impulsive decisions which we learn about later. i find it amazing that we cannot follow the principles of swaraj within our own party.”

according to her protests and demonstrations were helpful for the party in its early stages but were not anymore.”it is not enough to just name corporates and politicians” she said. ilmi said she might consider returning to the party in the future if she were assured a proper role and relevance.

founder of air deccan gopinath quit the party citing growing differences within the party leadership and criticised kejriwal for “shoot and scoot” politics. in a communication to aap’s karnataka convenor prithvi reddy in bangalore he said “i would like to resign from the membership of the aam admi party with immediate effect because of increasing differences with the party leadership and its ways.” gopinath felt that kejriwal was wrong in not furnishing a bail bond in the defamation case filed against him by former bharatiya janata party president nitin gadkari following which a delhi court has sent him to judicial custody until june 6.

senior aap leader yogendra yadav said he was saddened by ilmi’s decision to resign from the party.

he said he and several of his colleagues had done their best to dissuade her and ask her to wait until the party’s national executive could meet and discuss the issues raised by her.
