EMC unveils new Elastic Cloud Storage Appliance

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Emc a leading provider of it storage hardware solutions has announced the middle east launch of its new cloud and software-defined storage offerings.

the elastic cloud storage (ecs) appliance or ecsa makes it easier for enterprises to set up a private cloud-computing environment and also use public cloud services where appropriate.

mohammed amin senior vice-president and regional manager for turkey eastern europe africa and middle east at emc said software-defined storage is becoming the architectural backbone that all storage technologies will hang off.

he said such transformational technologies can play a key role in the creation of smart cities a goal that dubai has already initiated.

the advantage of cloud-based it and security are major areas of focus for smart cities going forward giving them the agility and flexibility needed and creating the foundation of trust to protect the data they own he pointed out.

he said the new ecs appliance which redefines the economic benefits of cloud storage for service providers and customers of any size in any industry delivers the ease-of-use and agility of a public cloud with the control and security of a private cloud and offers between nine and 28 per cent lower total cost of ownership in object storage implementations than public clouds from other providers.

emc is targeting two audiences with the ecs appliance — enterprise customers interested in running their own large-scale cloud-like storage deployments and service providers who want to break into the cloud storage game themselves. for both groups the company claims an economic advantage going with the ecs appliance over a public cloud.

the ecs appliance allows customers to add hyperscale cloud capabilities to existing private and hybrid cloud environments delivering ease-of-use through self-service capabilities fully automated provisioning and data services for next-generation applications according to david goulden chief executive officer of information infrastructure at emc.

the data driven by use of next-generation applications over mobile devices creates multiple challenges for service providers and customers: it should be accessible secure and analytic-ready and the storage infrastructure must be able to handle explosive growth.

“customers who choose to store their data in a public cloud environment often perceive immediate benefits in terms of ease-of-use and ability to scale; however they may incur other risks such as system outages and the costs of moving their data in and out of the public cloud environment. in many instances they can also run into compliance issues as they may not know where their data is stored if or how it is backed up and whether it is being accessed by unauthorised users. the emc ecs appliance provides a solution that eliminates these tradeoffs inherent within the public cloud” said goulden.

emc also announced the acquisition of flash startup dssd who it said had gone under the radar as one of the most exciting new firms in the field.
