(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) The report said 226 mps (42 per cent) have been elected to the 16th lok sabha with prior lok sabha experience.

as many as 315 (58 per cent) of india’s 543-member lok sabha have been elected to the lower house of parliament for the first time in the just-concluded elections.

this is the highest number of first-time members of parliament (mp) in lok sabha in the last three decades according to an analysis carried out by prs legislative research a think-tank.

these numbers include mps who might have been members of the rajya sabha or upper house of parliament before but have been elected to the lok sabha for the first time it said.

the report said 226 mps (42 per cent) have been elected to the 16th lok sabha with prior lok sabha experience.

former union minister ram vilas paswan from bihar union minister kamal nath from madhya pradesh and former lok sabha speaker purno a. sangma from meghalaya have been elected to the lok sabha for the ninth time in the 2014 elections.

kariya munda and shibu soren from jharkhand sumitra mahajan from madhya pradesh and arjun charan from orissa have been elected to the lok sabha for the eighth time in the 2014 general elections.

ms mahajan also has the distinction of being the woman mp with the most legislative experience in the 16th lok sabha.

of the 281 bharatiya janata party (bjp) mps elected to the 16th lok sabha 116 mps (41 per cent) have been mps before while 165 mps (59 per cent) have been elected to the lok sabha for the first time. of the 44 congress mps 35 have been mps before (80 per cent).

the all india anna dravida munnetra kazhagam (aiadmk) has 34 first-time mps (90 per cent). the trinamool congress has 19 first-time mps (56 per cent) while the biju janata dal has 12 (60 per cent).

in all 171 mps who were part of the 15th lok sabha are going to be part of the 16th lok sabha. the largest number of mps who continue from the 15th to the 16th lok sabha are from west bengal (18 mps) followed by karntaka (17 mps) and maharashtra (16 mps).

at 61 the 16th lok sabha has the highest number of women mps. the 15th lok sabha had 58 women.

interestingly the new lok sabha also has at 253 or 47 per cent the highest number of mps over the age of 55. the percentage of mps over the age of 55 was 43 per cent in the 15th lok sabha.

according to the study the lok sabha has been getting older with every election since the first in 1952.

only 71 mps (13 per cent) have been elected to the lok sabha in this election who happen to be under the age of 40.

as many as 75 per cent of the mps elected in the 2014 general elections have at least a bachelor’s degree. this is slightly lesser than the 15th lok sabha in which 79 per cent of mps were graduates.

interestingly the percentage of mps elected in the 2014 elections who do not have a matriculate degree is significantly higher in this election (13 per cent) in comparison to the 15th lok sabha (3 per cent).

at the same time the number of mps with just a matriculate degree has decreased in the 16th lok sabha to 10 per cent from 17 per cent in the 15th lok sabha. the number of members with a doctoral degree has also increased in the 16th lok sabha to 6 per cent from 3 per cent in the 15th lok sabha.

in the new lok sabha 27 per cent of mps elected have listed agriculture as their primary occupation followed by political and social work (24 per cent) and business (20 per cent).

in the 15th lok sabha 28 per cent mps had listed political and social work as their occupation 27 per cent had listed agriculture while 15 per cent had listed business.

“going back to the very first lok sabha that was formed in 1952 we find that the single largest occupation of members was that of lawyers (36 per cent) followed by agriculture (22 per cent) and business (12 per cent)” the study added.
