x-men: days of future past

following on from 2011’s acclaimed x-men: first class the seventh film in the series of marvel’s mutant superheroes looks set to be another smash.

bryan singer currently a polarising figure in hollywood due to his controversial personal life takes the reins from matthew vaughn for his third x-men outing – with vaughn dropping back to help contribute to the story. joining the regular ensemble cast are the likes of peter dinklage (game of thrones) and omar sy (the intouchables).

days of future past adapted from the 1981 comic book tale of the same name sees hugh jackman’s wolverine transported back in time to alter a historical event which threatens the existence of mankind and mutants alike.

reviews for the 225 million blockbuster have been stellar.

“not since 2003’s x2: x-men united has this filmmaker (singer) tapped so effortlessly into his talent for comic book gravitas his ability to mine emotional resonance pop poetry and (crucially) sly humour” said justin chang of variety.

“what we get here is largely fantastic not only re-energising old-favourite characters but introducing intriguing new ones” said nich de semlyen of empire magazine.

x-men: days of future past currently has a 93% rating on rottentomatoes.com and a 9.3/10 rating on imdb.com.

the last days on mars

liev schreiber stars in this sci-fi horror clunker which to date has grossed less than 25000 in the united states.

whilst on a mission to mars a crew of astronauts are terrorised by a deadly being.

oscar-nominated irish short filmmaker ruairi robinson steps into the director’s chair for his feature length debut but has no luck whatsoever in a story which critics found both derivative and dull.

“alas the film quickly loses its offbeat charm and devolves into a routine monster movie” said ben sachs of the chicago reader.

“in the ways that the last days on mars is like a horror movie it’s typical and in the ways it’s different it’s mostly flat” said mick lasalle of the san francisco chronicle.

chef

jon favreau – best-known for directing the first two iron man movies and playing monica’s billionaire boyfriend pete in friends – gathers some famous buddies to appear in his love letter to fine food.

favreau writes directs and stars in this comedy about los angeles chef carl casper who leaves his job after being boxed in creatively by his boss riva (dustin hoffman). carl decides to head to miami and start a food truck together with his ex-wife (sofia vergara) and friend (john leguizamo) before hitting the road for an adventure.

scarlett johansson and iron man himself robert downey jr. also appear in the film which has won praise for its funny and unfussy approach.

“buoyed by a latin-flavoured score and favreau’s knack for improv inspiration chef is the perfect antidote to hollywood junk food. like the best meals and movies this irresistible concoction feels good for the soul” said peter travers of rolling stone.

“don’t fill up on concessions if you catch chef. you’re going to want to eat afterward even with a belly full of popcorn” said scott bowles of usa today.

chef currently has an 88% rating on rottentomatoes.com and a 7.9/10 rating on imdb.com.
