US says its Russia strategy "unaffected" by China energy deal

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Following the signing of a USD-400-billion gas deal between Russia and China on Wednesday, the US said its strategy toward Moscow remains unchanged, and further sanctions should be expected if Ukraine's sovereignty remains threatened. "Energy is a global market. There are always new deals getting signed, particularly with major consumers and producers like China and Russia," said State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki. "We will continue to pursue our strategy as it relates to putting pressure on Russia." Pressed as to whether the energy deal would ultimately work against US interests in undermining the Russian economy, Psaki said she is not "prepared to jump to that conclusion." "We still believe we have a range of tools at our disposal," she added. "The executive orders the president has signed has given us those, and we're prepared to put in place consequences if needed." "Even with a range of individuals and financial entities we've seen a dramatic impact on the Russian economy," she noted.
