(MENAFN- The Peninsula) H E Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Chair of Supreme Education Council (SEC), graced the women's graduation ceremony of Qatar University yesterday.
A total of 989 students received their degree certificates from QU President Prof Sheikha Abdulla Al Misnad at the Class of 2014 graduation ceremony at Qatar National Convention Centre. Twenty-eight students were honoured for achieving GPA 3.50 and above.
The Minister of Education and Higher Education H E Dr Mohammed Abdul Wahed Ali Al Hammadi, QU vice-presidents, deans, heads of department, guests, faculty, students' relatives, and alumni were present.
The new graduates included 889 bachelors, 81 masters, 8 PhDs and 11 diploma holders.
The undergraduate degrees by colleges represented 371 Arts and Sciences (CAS), 197 Business & Economics (CBE), 14 College of Education (CED), 120 Engineering (CENG), 69 Law (LAWC), 22 College of Pharmacy (CPH) and 96 Shariah and Islamic Studies (CSIS).
Master's degrees included 21 CAS, 14 CBE, 20 CED, 25 CENG, and one CPH. It is CPH's first graduating student from MSc Pharm programme. Eight students received Doctor of Pharmacy degrees, while 11 received diplomas in education.
Prof Al Misnad thanked Sheikha Hind for honouring graduates and praised the SEC for guiding the country towards fulfilment of the education pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030 and development strategies. She also praised students for achieving their academic goals and reaping rewards of hard work and perseverance.
She said, "As I told your male colleagues yesterday, QU continues to ensure that its academic and research environment is of a standard and quality that enriches students' lives and motivates them to strive for excellence. We value the importance of student experience and spare no effort to provide them with opportunities in the classroom and the real world to prepare them for any future endeavour".
She also pointed to the next phase in QU's strategic plan which she said is to step up cooperation and integration with the national education system in line with Qatar's ambitious development projects which will require national professionals with high efficiency and readiness to join new and emerging fields.
She thanked the Board of Regents for committed leadership, and the faculty, staff and parents for support throughout the students' academic journey.
Valedictorian Amna Al Khalfan of College of Law congratulated the graduates and said: "We've waited for this day, endured ups and downs, and today we close this chapter in our lives and are prepared for the next phase towards a bright future.
"Sincerest gratitude to our parents for their unshakeable support and sacrifice, to our professors who guided us through our years of study, QU which gave us the best education, and Qatar in whom we have great pride".
