17 people killed in Kashmir accident

at least 17 people died and 34 others were injured when the bus they were travelling in from jammu to srinagar veered off the road in the hilly terrain of ramban district in jammu and kashmir in the early hours of tuesday.

official sources in ramban said the mishap occurred around 2.30am at digdol about 170km from jammu on the jammu-srinagar highway.

the private bus which was running a night service was carrying more than 50 passengers.

the sources said 17 of the injured were air-lifted by a helicopter to jammu for treatment while five others had been taken to jammu by road. twelve of the injured passengers were undergoing treatment at the ramban district hospital.

according to them initial inquiries suggested that the driver of the bus had probably fallen asleep at the wheel.

army personnel posted in the area had joined the civil administration in the rescue and relief operations they added.
