(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) The government?s development efforts target the region?s key economic sectors like energy tourism petrochemicals agriculture and food processing.

shaikh hamdan bin zayed al nahyan the ruler’s representative in the western region opened the second edition of al gharbia development forum at abu dhabi’s st regis saadiyat island resort on tuesday as part of the government’s efforts to accelerate the development of the region.

the western region accounts for 60 per cent of abu dhabi’s land area and is where the emirate’s oil and gas reserves are located.

the government’s development efforts target the region’s key economic sectors like energy tourism petrochemicals agriculture and food processing. they also seek to boost enabling sectors such as real estate transport logistics and government and community services.

the forum is expected to announce new projects and agreements with developers.

a statement by shaikh hamdan said the nation’s founding father the late shaikh zayed bin sultan al nahyan had always said that al gharbia region was a source of wealth and a cradle of history and heritage.

both the president his highness shaikh khalifa bin zayed al nahyan and general shaikh mohammed bin zayed al nahyan crown prince of abu dhabi and deputy supreme commander of uae armed forces give considerable attention to the region in line with this vision.

“shaikh khalifa showed his interest in the western region through directives to initiate mega projects in all economic and social sectors as well as through his visits to the region to get a first-hand experience of the progress of these projects” the statement said.

several initiatives and strategic plans were formulated for al gharbia.

shaikh khalifa appointed a representative of the abu dhabi ruler in the region five years ago to achieve more development in line with abu dhabi vision 2030 the emirate’s master plan and in accordance with the economic priorities of the emirate.

“we gathered here today to see how ideas have been translated into plans and projects thanks to the determination and dedication of the nationals of our country as well as their strong belief in teamwork and (due to the) need for closing ranks in order to achieve a better future for the region” the statement added.

the event was attended by shaikh nahyan bin mubarak al nahyan minister of culture youth and community development shaikh sultan bin tahnoun al nahyan chairman of abu dhabi transport department and chairman of abu dhabi tourism and culture authority diplomats senior officials and investors and business leaders who have interest in the region.

the western region development council organised the forum in collaboration with middle east economic digest.
