(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) French President Francois Hollande Tuesday threatened the Syrian regime of tougher sanctions if it was proven that it used chemical weapons again.
"We should use all legal means to condemn anew the Syrian regime and place it under sanctions if traces of chemical weapons were found in Syria," Hollande told reporters following a meeting with Syrian opposition leader Ahmad Al-Jarba.
Hollande condemned the massacres committed by the Syrian regime against its people.
Hollande and Al-Jarba also condemned the Syrian presidential elections due on June 3, saying the outcome "are already known." Meanwhile, sources close to the one-hour meeting between Hollande and Al-Jarba at the Elysee Palace that the opposition chief reiterated demands that opposition gunmen be supplied with anti-aircraft artillery and anti-tank rockets. France is worried the weapons would fall in the hands of extremist groups.
The meeting, attended by Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius, touched upon the upgrade of diplomatic representation of the Syrian National Council (SNC) in Paris, the sources told KUNA.
The two men also discussed outcome of the Friends of Syria meeting that was held in London earlier this month, and importance of supporting the "moderate" opposition forces.
They also discussed France's quest to rally international support to refer Syrian officials for the International Court of Justice for committing war crimes and crimes against humanity.
