US not supporting Haftar attacks on Libya gov't

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) After forces loyal to Libyan General Khalifa Haftar attacked government buildings in Tripoli, in what he claimed was an assault on "Islamists," the US insisted on Tuesday that it is not lending him any support. "We do not condone or support the actions on the ground, and nor have we assisted with these actions," said State Department Spokesperson Jen Psaki. She added that the US has not "had contact with him recently." Haftar had fought both for and against deceased leader Muammar Gaddafi, and now commands an army that reportedly killed 70 people in Benghazi on Friday, all alleged to be Islamic militants. "Many of Libya's challenges do require dialogue," said Psaki. "We think that is the best means forward. "We remain committed to supporting them," she concluded.
