Qatar- Clinical Al Sadd clinch Emir Cup

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) A goal apiece from Raul Gonzalez, Ibrahim Majed and Hasan Khalid Haydos helped Al Sadd trounce Al Sailiya 3-0 and win the Emir Cup here yesterday. At the Khalifa Stadium watched by a capacity crowd, the 2011 AFC Champions League winners struck goals at regular intervals to pick up their first trophy of the season. Al Sadd who lost the last two editions made sure they did not finish on the losers side for the third year in a row. In 2012 season, coach Hussain Amute's side lost to Al Gharafa, while last year they went down to Al Rayyan. Yesterday, Al Sadd, who finished third in the Qatar Stars League (QSL), erased the bitter memories of losing the last two finals of the Emir Cup with a dominant show. Al Sadd started dictating terms early and went into the lead in 33th minute with veteran striker Raul directing his grounder into the back of the nets. Down by a goal, Al Sailiya bounced back and were able to get a penalty in the very next minute. Captain Dejano Peili who stepped up to take the spot kick, however, ballooned it over the cross bar much to the despair of the Al Sailiya supporters. Al Sailiya continued to press for the equaliser but could not make deep inroads into the Al Sadd defense. With both the teams failing to add to the scoreline, the teams went into the half time break with Al Sadd leading 1-0. Al Sadd consolidated the lead in the 64th minute with Majed getting into the thick of action with a goal. Down by two goals, Al Sailiya, who finished fourth in the Qatar Stars League, tried to rattle the Al Sadd defense with break back moves but without success. Much against the run of play, Al Sadd put the issue beyond doubt with Haydos scoring a injury time goal. With the final whistle the Al Sadd players broke into celebration to celebrate the first trophy of the season.
