(MENAFN - Arab News) The dialysis center in jeddah has opened its doors for cases that need treatment in government hospitals. the decision to open the health facility to the public is in line with the directions of custodian of the two holy mosques king abdullah.
the dialysis center is part of the king abdullah international humanitarian fund with prince khalid bin abdullah as chairman of the board and princes miteb abdulaziz mishal and faisal bin abdullah ibrahim al-eisa abdullatif al-othman abdulmuhsim al-mhaisin and mohammad jamil as members.
bandar al-qanawi executive director for health affairs in the national guard said that the national dialysis project which is divided into three phases will take care of 6000 patients out of a total of 14000 who need dialysis for the next seven years according to recent surveys. he said that the center has a capacity of 2400 dialyses per week.
al-qanawi pointed out that the center is operated by a national cadre including administrators and supervisors where the saudi share is 95 percent.
the statistics were uncovered during a tour to the center by a number of media personalities and members of the community.
al-qanawi said the first phase includes establishing dialysis centers in riyadh and jeddah the second phase includes madinah with 48 beds and makkah with 100 beds in addition to centers in al-qasim hail and rafaa. these will be operated after haj. the third stage is still under study and targets remote areas. he noted that the buildings would be ready in four months.
he said the dialysis center in jeddah is under the supervision and the operation of the national guard and that it has 204 dialysis equipment that have been imported from the best international companies.
the center takes 65 patients per day and the number increases every week. the operating cost of these equipment is estimated at sr400 million. he said that each specialized doctor supervises 10 machines to offer the best services to patients.
he pointed out that the establishment has 1000 dialysis machines that have been distributed across the kingdom according to the needs and in cooperation with the saudi organ transplant center.
studies show that large numbers of dialysis patients suffer from anemia which has been taken into consideration. al-qanawi said each individual patient consumes more than 180 liters of water during a single dialysis session at a cost of sr400.
medical director for the dialysis center in jeddah zuhair mustafa najem said the center is operated according to the two-shift system and has three floors that are fully equipped.
najem said that the center works in coordination with the ministry of health to transfer patients and follow up on their medical conditions.
najem pointed out that the first floor has 50 machines the second has 88 and the third 66. he said the value of each machine is sr100000 and the annual treatment of a single patient also amounts to the same figure.
the center also has a pediatric department and lab to conduct tests on patients. six rooms have been allocated for the isolation of patients with infectious diseases such as hepatitis b. this department has air-suction equipment where the machines continuously disinfect the rooms.
