(MENAFN - Arab News) Potholes and the poor condition of some of the city's roads are not only giving commuters a bumpy ride but are also hitting their pockets by causing heavy expenditures on the frequent maintenance of their damaged vehicles.

several roads in the city have been dug up for various projects but a few areas have ditches and potholes due to lack of maintenance. major areas such as prince majid street in al-aziziya district al faisaliyah district palestine street sharafiya street bab makkah street and others have become a nightmare for commuters.

rahman naser a local resident of al-aziziya district complained: 'the bad condition of the roads cause bumpy rides which damage vehicles. we have complained to the authorities several times but they have delayed the work by almost two months although minor repairs like filling potholes and craters do not take much time."

he added that driving on such rough roads loosens the nuts and bolts of vehicles and steadily affects other parts too.

owners of shops located on this road are having a dreadful time too. 'we are facing huge problems with the deep potholes and ditches in front of our shops. customers find it difficult to reach our shops causing us to lose business. moreover we have to look for an alternative space to park the visitors' vehicles as this obstructs our shops" said mohammed nazir a restaurant owner.

bassam raef a mechanic at an auto repair shop said that they get frequent complaints about damaged tires shock absorbers clutch and ball bearings which are most often damaged by riding on rough roads.

sayeed abdul samad an annoyed resident said: 'the roads continue to be in bad shape due to improper repair works. the authorities need to get serious about the health and safety of the residents. the bad condition of the roads has given rise to different health concerns with the roads swathed in a heap of dust and dirt all the time."

'there is no end to this problem. it is important that the municipal corporation uses the public money efficiently and sign contracts with more qualified companies" he added.

meanwhile officials from the municipality said that they are coming up with reports to identify potholes and stretches that need immediate attention. 'we are considering road repairs as our priority and will coordinate with experienced departments to repair them" said a municipality spokesman.
