(MENAFN - Arab News) Nine bangladeshis and two indians died in the massive fire that broke out in the badr district of riyadh on monday the embassies of the victims confirmed on thursday.

seven of the bangladeshi victims are from comilla and one each from madaripur and feni sources at the expatriates' welfare board said. four of the deceased have been identified as matiur rahman mohammad selim mohammad jalal and shah alam.

surinder bhagat spokesman of the indian embassy said: 'mohammad waseem from uttar pradesh and alam mohammad from patna bihar died in the tragic fire."

he said the local police is investigating the matter and would submit a report to the embassy.

the bodies are being kept at the shumaisi hospital until the investigation is complete. the bodies can then be sent home said bhagat.

mohammad shahidul islam the bangladesh ambassador described the incident as 'terrible" and expressed sympathy with the victims' families.

'there are nine bangladeshi citizens among the victims. i went to the hospital to see them.

it was a terrible accident. the bodies were badly charred in the fire" islam told arab news.

he said other injured workers have received medical treatment.

'we will send the bodies soon to their relatives in bangladesh for burial. we are working on it and are in constant touch with the local authorities."

maj. mohammed al-hamadi spokesman of the civil defense confirmed that all the victims are asians and that the police is investigating the matter. he refused to comment further.

the fire broke out at the titas furniture factory on monday night.

the operations room at the civil defense in riyadh received information about the fire at 10:13 p.m. and sent 14 firefighting teams 15 support units and eight rescue teams to the site. however the fire gutted the entire 600-sqm workshop.

witnesses said most victims died of smoke inhalation. some of the workers managed to escape unhurt.

according to sources two bangladeshis named raju and mainul were running the factory for a saudi national.

raju is allegedly in hiding while mainul is believed to be in bangladesh sources said.
