(MENAFN Press) GEMS Education is proud to announce the opening of GEMS Sports Academy to serve the Emirate's student athletes. The Academy, one of a kind in the Middle East, will provide student-athletes in Dubai with the high quality education GEMS is known for, whilst simultaneously advancing their rising sporting careers.
GEMS Sports Academy will offer coaching and training in a wide range of sports, including soccer, swimming, tennis, golf and basketball starting in September 2014. Students are invited to enquire for admission to the course in any sport they feel they have a level of competency. The sports offering will naturally grow as the academy grows. The academy will initially be based at the GEMS Wellington Academy Silicon Oasis campus and other specialist sporting facility locations across Dubai.
"The GEMS Sports Academy will fill a need for parents in the UAE. They have told us that there are limited education options allowing the flexibility for their child to commit to specific sports training, while still continuing to receive a high quality education," said James Tucker , Sports Director at GEMS Sports Academy. Mr Tucker recently joined GEMS after setting up the academy sports provision at Bolton Wanderers FC and similar smaller programmes for the Premier League's youth education programmes.
"Living in the Middle East should not prevent our young people from perusing their sporting dreams and performing at a world class level. With the highest level of sports training and provision, there is no reason why they could not be the next Serena Williams, Ian Thorpe or David Beckham. In the past, it has been a major sacrifice to defer education or send your child abroad to progress their sports traning. Now, under this new and exciting programme at GEMS Sports Academy, that highest calibre provision is accessible on our doorstep," Tucker said.

Students will get expert sports instruction and coaching from professional coaches, and they will train through an extensive training timetable, all while working towards the university recognised International Baccalaureate Career “ related Certificate. This course includes areas of study such as Anatomy, Physiology, Leadership in Sport, Fitness Testing and Sports Nutrition.
Having sport at the heart of the provision is beneficial to students, both mentally and physically, and will allow students to be involved in an exciting programme. This, in combination with the academic rigour and global focus of the International Baccalaureate (IB) provides students with the academic, practical, and social skills required by the 21st Century learner.

"This type of sports programme would have been fantastic for me, during my time at Jumeirah College as a professional athlete. The GEMS Sports Academy would have allowed me train to my full potential, as well as making sure I was able to manage my academic studies better. This programme would have definitely given me the best opportunity to reach my full potential at an earlier age," said former Jumeriah College student and @012 Olympian, Velimir Stjepanovic.
Jay Varkey, Senior Director - Business Development and Commercial, GEMS Education said, "This is the kind of innovative approach to education that GEMS is known for. Students will have the education, skills and knowledge to enable them to thrive during and beyond their athletic careers."
