(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Omantel has announced the renewal of its sponsorship of Oman Sail's Youth Programme. The Oman Sail youth programme, which is now named the Omantel Youth Programme, has become a blueprint for youth sport across the region.

It has driven some inspirational performances among Oman's youth over the past few years, including a range of team and individual gold medals in GCC Championship events.

Speaking at the signing event, Dr Amer al Rawas, CEO, Omantel, said, ''We are here to celebrate the renewal of Omantel's partnership with Oman Sail. The programme promotes sailing among youth. The sponsorship comes as part of Omantel's endeavours to promote development of the youth, who are the pillar of any society and who make up the bulk of the Omani population.''

Rawas said that Oman, which has over 1,700km of coastline, has acted as a communication link between the East and West, from China to the US. ''Throughout the ages, Omani sailors have been renowned. They are source of pride for all of us. We are proud of having such a national organisation that aims to create a new generation of sailors who can continue the work of their predecessors.''

David Graham, CEO, Oman Sail, said, ''Till date, Oman Sail has introduced more than 16,500 people to sailing. We have created a formal pathway that offers sailors, teams and coaches distinct goals to work towards, and gives them the means to achieve them. It also gives coaches a clear system to select teams for national, regional and international championships. The ultimate goal of the pathway is to prepare a team that can represent Oman's first ever sailing team to the 2020 Olympic games. Our partnership with Omantel has yielded great results and it has been a pleasure to work with an organisation that understands the importance of sport in society and how it can contribute to the well-being of a nation.'' Oman Sail has four sailing schools at Marina Bandar al Rowdha, Musannah, Sur and The Wave, Muscat.
