(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The UN on Wednesday said it has not yet decided whether the successor of Joint Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi will represent both the UN and the Arab League or just the UN, as discussions on a political solution in Syria continue.
"The United Nations would look at all aspects of its work in Syria, including the status of its envoy dealing with Syria -- I think we will have to see when that happens," UN Spokesman Stephane Dujarric told the daily press briefing.
He noted that the United Nations will do some "soul-searching on how it can best move forwards on Syria, and that the wider international community should do the same." The UN is looking at all those aspects of its work in Syria and "a big part of that is in cooperation with the Arab League. Contacts between the UN and the Arab league are frequent and they are deep especially on Syria," he added.
Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Al-Araby asserted to Al-Hayat Newspaper today that UN Chief Ban Ki-moon has never mentioned to him his intention to terminate the Arab League status from Brahimi's successor, and that they both agreed to continue to consult on the successor's mission.
He added that he did not hear of change of status for Brahimi's successor while discussing the names with Ban, adding that he does not particularly insist that the successor should be Arab.
Al-Araby also said that Ban prefers that the successor be a former President or Prime Minister so that he can be influential.
Ban lamented Brahimi's resignation yesterday as a "tragedy for the Syrian people" and a "failure" for the United Nations. Many names were mentioned for a successor, but no decision has been made.
