Qatar- Amnesty unhappy over reforms

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) While FIFA has lauded Qatar for proposing changes to sponsorship and exit permit rules for foreign workers, Amnesty International has been critical. FIFA Chief Sepp Blatter was quoted by wire agency AFP as saying the Qatari move was a significant step. "This announcement is a significant step in the right direction for sustainable change in the workers' welfare standards in Qatar." But Amnesty said the proposed reforms fell far short of the fundamental changes needed to address systemic abuses against migrant workers in various sectors. The government makes no mention of a time-frame within which most reforms will be implemented, it said.
