British unemployment rate dips to 6.8 percent


(MENAFN) According to data by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), British unemployment rate declined to 6.8 percent in the January-March period of 2014, down from 7.2 percent in the fourth quarter of 2013, marking its lowest level over the past five years, Xinhua reported. Figures showed that there were 2.21 million unemployed people in the first quarter of the current year, down by 13,300 compared to the previous quarter. ONS said that the employment rate for those aged from 16 to 64 for the first quarter was 72.7 percent, up 0.1 percent from the three months before, while there were 30.43 million people in employment aged 16 and over, 283,000 higher than for the fourth quarter of 2013. Data also showed that British employees' total pay was 1.7 percent in the same period, higher than a year earlier, with pay excluding bonuses 1.3 percent higher.
