Japan S. Korea to Hold Talks Thursday

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Kyo may 14 (qna) - senior officials from japan and south korea will meet thursday in tokyo to discuss a range of issues as part of efforts to improve soured bilateral relations japanese foreign minister fumio kishida said.

japan will raise the issue of koreans filing lawsuits demanding compensation from japanese companies for wartime conscripted labor as well as import restrictions on japanese fishery products imposed by south korea over the fukushima nuclear accident according to kishida.

in thursday's meeting japan is expected to request that the south korean government deal appropriately with lawsuits filed in south korean courts by former labor conscripts and relatives claiming compensation from japanese companies.

there has been a spate of such lawsuits since 2012 when south korea's supreme court reversed previous lower court decisions and ruled that the right of wartime conscripted laborers and their families to seek unpaid wages and compensation was not invalidated by a 1965 treaty with japan under which the two countries normalized bilateral ties.
