al jazira wrapped up their arabian gulf league campaign with a win over al sharjah at the mohammed bin zayed stadium late on saturday night.

the solitary goal victory over their former coach paulo bonamigo’s club ensured the ‘spiders’ of a top-three finish in uae’s top flight. al jazira finished with 45 points from 26 games and gave them temporary hold of second place.

their 12th win aided by a sultan barghash goal on the half-hour mark was all the more sweet for coach walter zenga as it was the second team which scripted it.

with al jazira renewing their battle against al ain in a couple of days time for a spot in the afc champions league quarterfinals zenga rested his regulars and gave the bench a run out against al sharjah.

al jazira travel to al ain for the return leg of the afc champions league round of 16 at the hazza bin zayed stadium on tuesday night. the ‘spiders’ have the tough task of overturning a 2-1 loss at home.

up against a reserve team al sharjah dominated possession and created a flurry of opportunities through fellype gabriel. gabriel had a crack in the early moments of the game but was denied by al jazira goalkeeper khalid al senaani.

ahmed khamis too had a chance early on but khalid al senaani was at hand to thwart it. al jazira who were playing second fiddle as the half worn on broke the deadlock from the first opportunity that they created. sultan barghash played a one-two with hassan ameen before slipping past al sharjah goalkeeper mohammed yousif on the half-hour mark.

al sharjah came close to equalising and taking the lead moments later but muhain khalifa muhain drilled it wide of the post. then ze carlos’ header missed the target after a gabriel cross from the right.

al sharjah continued in the same vein after the break but a goal remained elusive. yousif saeed juma and captain mauricio donizeti ramos couldn’t make the opportunities count. al jazira only attempt in the second half through substitute khalfan mubarak al rezzy but his effort hit the woodwork.

al sharjah finished seventh with 40 points. they won 10 lost 10 and drew six.
