EU signs agreement with Ukraine to support the transition process

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso and acting Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk signed in Brussels Tuesday a new programme to support the transition process in Ukraine. The new "State Building Contract" programme, worth 355 million euro, and complemented by a 10 million euro programme for the civil society, will help the government of Ukraine to address short-term economic stabilisation needs and implement governance reforms. Speaking at a press conference, Barroso said this assistance is part of the long term support measures worth 11 billion euro that the EU announced for Ukraine in March. The two sides also singed today the Memorandum of Assistance to Ukraine that is necessary to give effect to the one billion euro Macro Financial Assistance loan programme. "Our message to Russia is to engage, to implement its part of the Geneva statement, to repeal the mandate of the Federation Council to use force on Ukrainian soil and to act as a responsible stakeholder of our community of nations," said Barroso. On his part, Yatsenyuk said "the key challenges my country is facing are as follows; The first one is the security and we need to preserve peace and stability in my country. "But it seems that Russia is already engaged in supporting Russian led protestors and terrorists. We urge Russia to condemn them to edge all these so-called protesters or really terrorist to leave the buildings or to do everything they can to stabilise the situation in Ukraine," he added.
