(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Traditional fishing methods landed a total haul of 203,454 tonnes of catch in 2013, an increase of 7.8 per cent when compared to 188,817 tonnes caught during the previous year, according to the National Center for Statistics and Information (NCSI).

The total value of traditional fishery sector grew by 15.6 per cent at the end of 2013 to RO161.608mn compared to RO139.752mn by the end of 2012.

During 2013, commercial fishing recorded a significant decline of 69.2 per cent from 1,292 tonnes by the end of 2012, to 398 tonnes by the end of 2013.

The Total and value fish landed by species' report issued by NCSI reveals that the total catch in coastal fishing was 1,394 tonnes at the end of 2013, compared to 1,450 tonnes by the end of 2012, reflecting a year-on-year decline of 3.9 per cent.

Breaking down the catch figures by region, Al Wusta governorate was ranked first in terms of traditional fishing in 2013 with 53,006 tonnes compared to 47,755 tonnes in 2012, an increase of 11 per cent. Al Wusta was followed by Sharqiyah (north and south) with 50,677 tonnes, compared to 50,065 tonnes in 2012, an increase of 1.2 per cent.

Batinah governorate (north and south) was third with 34,126 tonnes by the end of 2013 compared to 31.411 tonnes in 2012, an increase of 8.6 per cent. The governorate with the lowest catch in 2013 was Muscat with 15,707 tonnes in 2013, which when compared to 10,894 tonnes in 2012 increased by 44.2 per cent.'

Regarding fish landed through traditional methods, the report revealed that demersal fish catch increased by 8.4 per cent from 48,917 tonnes in 2012 to 53,015 tonnes in 2013. The volume of large pelagic fish increased by 0.1 per cent to reach 53,544 tonnes in 2013 compared to 53,509 tonnes in 2012. Meanwhile, the volume of small pelagic fish also increased by 12.3 per cent from 70,674 tonnes in 2012 to 79,401 tonnes in 2013. The quantity of sharks and rays caught in 2013 stood at 8,425 tonnes compared to 6,461 tonnes, an increase of 30.4 per cent.

The overall volume of landed crustaceans declined by 2.3 per cent, from 985 tonnes in 2012 to 962 tonnes in 2013. Landing of molluscs, also declined by 2.9 per cent to reach 6,350 tonnes in 2013 compared to 6,541 tonnes in 2012. Other unidentified fish catch increased by 1.6 per cent to reach 1,756 tonnes in 2013, compared to 1,729 tonnes in 2
