Tel Aviv Court Sentences Olmert to Six Years in Prison


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) L aviv may 13 (qna) - tel aviv district court tuesday sentenced former prime minister of israel ehud olmert to six years in prison for his conviction on two counts of bribery in the holyland corruption case.



judge david rozen read out olmert's sentence this morning and fined him us $290000 (1 million shekels). "a public servant who accepts bribes is equivalent to a traitor" rozen said.

investigations in march found olmert 68 guilty of accepting bribes during his term as mayor of jerusalem in exchange for helping the developers of the city's holyland park residential project.



olmert's lawyers are likely to request court to allow him to remain free until the supreme court rules on an appeal against his march 31 conviction a process that could take months.

ahead of the sentencing on tuesday morning olmert said in a statement "this is a sad day in which an unjust and severe sentence is expected to be handed down on an innocent man." olmert had denied wrongdoing in the holyland apartment complex deal as well as other corruption allegations that forced his resignation as premier in 2008.
