Donetsk province asks Russia to join it


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Ukrainian province of Donetsk asked Russia Monday to allow it join the federation following the outcome of the referendum that was held yesterday. The province asked Russia to join it in line with the constitution of the "People's Republic of Donetsk" and the results of the referendum of separation, Denis Pushilin, one of the leaders in Donetsk, was quoted by the Itar-tass news agency as saying. He said Donetsk's supreme council would run the affairs of the breakaway province, form a government and a national security council. The electoral commission in Donetsk said 89.7 percent of people voted in favor of independent from motherland Ukraine. Kiev rejected the referendum and its outcome, while Ukrainian army and security forces tried to derail the voting in some of the eastern areas. Russia said it would respect the choice of people in eastern Ukraine, mostly occupied by pro-Russian people, while the European Union and the US rejected the referendum and considered it illegal as well as violating the Ukrainian constitution. Meanwhilte, Itar-tass quoted medical sources in eastern Ukraine as saying 49 people were killed since outbreak of confrontations between pro-Russia gunmen and Ukrainian forces in March this year.
