Qatar emphasizes importance of UN role in fighting illegal drugs, crime


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Qatari Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Al-Mahmoud Monday appreciated the key role played by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, calling for increased support and resources to help the Office achieve its mission. Al-Mahmoud, also Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, made his remarks in a speech in the opening of the 23rd Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice conference in Vienna. The minister deemed the conference as a good example of international cooperation. Al-Mahmoud also underlined aspects of Qatar's support to the UN, terming this support as a fundamental pillar of Qatar's policy. Al-Mahmoud also underscored Qatar's contribution to the UN's various activities, at the top of which were supporting peace, the fight against crime, sustainable development, culture, education, health and human rights, in addition to its donation to support international and regional organizations as well as to enhance technical cooperation, exchange of expertise and financing for development. The minister noted to the importance of multilingualism in the UN as it is an essential part of the UN legal status as stated in the UNESCO Convention in 2005. The minister added that the State of Qatar continued its consultations with States concerned in order to include their constructive ideas and recommendations in the conference agenda, pointing out that many other initiatives will be taken in the coming months.
