(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Thirty-six job seekers will undergo vocational training as part of Shell Development Oman's (SDO) Training for Employment initiative.
SDO on Sunday signed two contracts worth US$350,000 (RO134,393) to provide these job seekers training in non-destructive testing (NDT) and welding.
The first contract, signed with the Technical & Administrative Training Institute (TATI), will see training of 20 job seekers in NDT. It will provide on-site training and equip these job seekers with the knowledge to operate NDT machines. The course also provides trainees an overview of basic English, and health and safety issues.
The second contract, signed with the National Training Institute (NTI), will train 16 job seekers in welding.
As part of this programme, trainees will be taught use of welding equipment, trained in communications, given knowledge on health and safety and carrying out quality checks.
SDO works with the Oman Association for Petroleum Services (OPAL) to secure available jobs in the market and collaborates with prospective employers to train suitable candidates accordingly. Upon successful course completion, trainees are placed in private sector establishments accordingly.
The contracts were signed by Chris Breeze, Shell's country chairman in Oman, Irshad al Lawati, CEO of OPAL, Khalid M Asad, managing director of TATI, and Lawrence Alva, CEO of NTI.
Breeze said, ''Equipping citizens with vocational skills and providing employment opportunities is one of our responsibilities towards the sultanate. Our Training for Employment programme is a pillar of our wider social investment agenda and gives young Omanis from different socio-economic and educational backgrounds an opportunity to contribute to the country's growing economy.''
Speaking on the occasion, Lawati stressed the importance of this programme and the significant impact training can have on the development of organisations, maintaining standards, and improving staff productivity.
He expressed his appreciation for those in SDO and the training institutes which will enable a new batch of Omanis to secure employment in welding and non-destructive testing.
