the charity founded in 1989 by a group of businessmen to do philanthropic work exclusively in the uae celebrated its silver jubilee by upping the money spent on humanitarian assistance from dh146 million in 2012 to dh151 million in 2013.abidine tahir al iwadhi general manager of the society said “we are solely concerned with local families in the low-income group.”

the society helps orphans students widows divorcees people who have been deserted families of prisoners patients the elderly and people with special needs.

it also extends help during emergency cases.

al iwadhi said 2013 marked a rise in zakat (alms) revenues over other resources.

“zakat payments last year amounted to nearly dh108 million that is 72 per cent of total spending. other resources including donations and endowments accounted for nearly dh43 million.”

in 2013 the largest share of spending was earmarked for low-income families. a total of dh48 million went out to over 5500 households providing them monthly financial aid. food and assistance in kind amounted to another dh12 million.

the charity sponsored 2000 orphans allocating dh12.5 million. its student project spent dh3.7 million to help about 18 students.

the charity also paid off debts worth dh400000 for insolvent debtors and provided house appliances worth dh1.4 million to several families.

al iwadhi said another dh800000 was spent on its ‘needy-home maintenance project’. it also spent dh2.3 million for people with special needs and allotted dh2 million for the cost of medical treatments. in addition the society disbursed dh40 million in lump sums to aid people during urgent incidents while dh9 million was spent on ramadan mir (foodstuff).

the society’s ‘your old is their new’ project which collects old clothes and sells them to recycling companies fetched dh3 million. al iwadhi said the money was spent to buy new clothes coupon cards for the needy.
