France- 18 films to compete for Golden Palm award at Cannes


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Eighteen international films are competing this year for the Palme d'Or, Golden Palm, award at the 67th Cannes Film Festival, set to kick off here on Wednesday. The festival is to open up with the premier of the controversial film "Grace of Monaco", which depicts different stages of the life of Princess Grace of Monaco, also known as Grace Kelly, a former Hollywood actress who married Rainier III of Monaco in 1956. The film stars Australian actresses Nicole Kidman, who plays the role of Princess Grace, and is directed by French filmmaker Olivier Dahan. This year's festival will also see an Arab presence by Mauritania's Filmmaker Abderrahmane Sissako, who returns to compete for the Golden Palm with his film "Timbuktu". Other films by returning winners Jean-Luc Godard, Ken Loach, the Dardennes brothers, and David Cronenberg are among those chosen to compete for the Golden Palm at this year's Cannes film festival.
