(MENAFN - Arab Times)  kuwait city feb 3 (kuna): director of the health well-being division of the ministry of health dr abeer al- baho affirmed sunday that the ministry scaled up the efforts to curb 'the worrying rates' of obesity. 'the ratio of fat people to the population in kuwait is the world's second highest only after the united states' she said in a press conference on the launching of the second awareness campaign on this problem between feb 5-7. 'an estimated 48 percent of kuwaiti women and 36.6 of men are overweight while the world average rate is only one person out of six' dr al-baho said citing statistics of the world health organizations (who). the prevalence rate of obesity worldwide has increased by 10 percent since 1980. obesity has become the fifth cause of death claiming the lives of some 2.8 million adult people annually according to who estimates.

'the ministry of health realizing the seriousness of the problem and its impacts on the public health has launched a range of joint programs with government and non-government organizations on the local and the gulf levels with a view to sharing experience in the domains of awareness prevention and treatment of obesity' she pointed out. dr al-baho noted that the main cause of the problem is the gap between high number of consumed calories and low number of burnt ones. on his part qotaiba saleh al-bassam director of the public relations division of boubyan bank said the bank picked children's overweight as theme of this year's campaign against obesity. 'the bank has been active in shouldering its social responsibility in the recent years and contributed to a range of public health awareness campaigns on such problems as diabetes blood pressure and obesity' he added. meanwhile ahmad al- ibrahim head of the second campaign against obesity said the activities of this year's event include a healthcare show where specialized companies and clinics will showcase their latest contributions to the improvement of public health.
