Imran Khan warns government against bid to sabotage May 11 protest rally

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Pakistan tehreek-i-insaaf chief imran khan on wednesday warned the government of dire consequences if it tried to stop his party?s peaceful protest against vote rigging on may 11.

addressing a press conference here the pti leader said there was no other way left for them but to take to streets as they knocked every door against the rigging in the last general elections for the last one year but no one gave justice.

imran said he had gone to courts tribunals and parliament against the poll rigging but no institution is ready to listen to him. he added that national assembly speaker ayaz sadiq has obtained stay order against his plea. he said after disappointment from all the institutions his party has decided to stage a protest which is their legal right.

imran suggested that article-6 must be applied to those who won the polls through rigging and added that such rulers cannot solve problems of masses who came into power by using unfair means.

he said the pti would present charter of demands at may 11 protest at d-chowk in islamabad. he warned that pakistan muslim league-nawaz government may crumble if it tried to stop or sabotage the may 11 rally adding the government will have to face consequences if our workers were barred from participating in the rally.

“there is no use of taking part in such elections where polls are always rigged. people of pakistan seek justice” said imran whose pti rules khyber pakhtunkhwa with coalition partner the jamaat-e-islami. imran however refrained from accusing the judiciary of involvement in election irregularities saying that “our party respects the judiciary.”

but he again questioned the role of returning officers and a media house in facilitating the pml-n victory in 2013 elections.

imran called for action against those involved in rigging. “those who stole the public mandate should be punished under article 6 of the constitution” he said.

when asked how geo tv was involved in the poll rigging imran said geo anchor najam sethi had rigged votes in 35 constituencies for which he was later rewarded with pakistan cricket board chairmanship and geo with millions of dollars cricket contracts.

imran said he is not against all geo staff as many journalists in geo have given great sacrifices for freedom of media.

the pti chief alleged geo owner mir shakil is blackmailing him by launching a character assassination campaign against him and added that he is not scared of this cheap campaign. lashing out at the government imran said sharif government had paid rs500 billion circular debt and despite spending such huge amount from the public money people are facing 20 hours long power cuts and circular debt has again swelled to rs200 billion. — online
