Sri Lanka court frees six hardline monks

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A lankan court granted bail to six monks of the extremist buddhist group bodu bala sena (bbs) on monday after admonishing them for disrupting religious harmony in the country.

bbs’s raucous general secretary galagodaaththe gnanasara and five of his followers were charged with threatening to assault a senior buddhist monk and muslims representing their community at a press conference last month.

the monks who were released on a lkrs 100000 bail each were caught on camera barging into an inter-faith press conference called by watareka vijitha thero and threatening to disrobe and assault the senior monk. the monk was made to apologise to the public for calling an inter-faith dialogue in front of cameras.

he later lodged a police complaint against the bbs monks saying that he did so under duress.

a separate complaint was filed against the bbs monk by some muslim representatives for making disparaging remarks about the holy quran a week later.

the bodu bala sena and its general secretary have been blamed for attacks against minority muslims since the end of sri lanka’s three decade war against the tamil tigers in 2009.

the extremist group that spews hate against muslims and christians has been responsible for several attacks on mosques churches and muslims establishments and individuals.

last month bbs galagodaaththe gnanasara and other monks were acquitted of attacking and causing destruction to a church outside capital colombo. the international community continues to condemn the violence of the monks which is contradictory to the preachings of buddhism.
