everyone loves a story about an underdog. we are attracted to stories in which the average person succeeds through hard work and sincerity. amole gupte’s hawaa hawaai tells the story of a young skating coach and how he fulfils his dream. saqib saleem plays the leading character. he made his debut with mujhse fraandship karoge (2011) followed by mere dad ki maruti (2013) and bombay talkies (2013).
while talking to city times about hawaa hawaii saqib said “it’s a film about a dreamer and people who have fire within them. we are saying that one should visualise one’s dreams and achieve them. i think everybody in this world is a dreamer. this film essentially is an underdog story. this is also the first film (in bollywood) about skating. it’s a very genuine and heartfelt film.”
amole gupte the creative director of taare zameen par (2007) who also made stanley ka dabba (2011) once again directs his son partho in this film along with saqib.
saqib who has worked with yash raj films and karan johar said that amole gupte is the most accommodating director that he has worked with. “amole lets you be and does not interfere in an actor’s space. it doesn’t mean that he is not watching you. he lets you do what you want and when he feels that you are going offline he quietly comes and whispers something in your ear. he is one of the most chilled out directors you can ask for.”
saqib said that it was a learning experience to work in a film where most of the star cast consisted of kids.
“in all the films that i have done before i was the youngest and here i am doing a film where i am the oldest. i have these kids looking up to me. so keeping the film aside as a responsibility i had to live up to the expectation of these kids. i consciously decided if i wanted this film to work there has to be a genuine bond with the kids. with kids you cannot pretend. i made a conscious decision to come to set one hour early just to bond with them. i told them things about my life that i have not told anyone. i wanted them to speak to me and trust me. if you want the kids to trust you you have to trust them. they give me so much of love. i would go to the sets and they would pounce on me.”
question him further about whether his loved ones felt that he has matured as a person after this film and the 26-year-old actor replies “i have become more calmer and more sensitive towards life and situations. not sure what my girlfriend feels but my mother and father surely think that i have grown up.”
saqib is the younger brother of actress huma qureshi. he counts gangs of wasseypur (2012) and dedh ishqiya (2014) amongst his favourite performances of huma. saqib says “to be in the same frame as madhuri dixit and acting with her is the biggest an actor could achieve. i still remember huma and me growing up in delhi as madhuri fans. she always idolised her. to hold her own in a film with madhuri is commendable.”
we ask young saqib whether he has any good friends in the fraternity and there was some name dropping before the actor got really honest. “in all honesty i do have some friends but not a lot of them. i have access to aditya chopra. he launched me. i am very lucky to be directed by karan johar. i have access to these people and they are kind enough to guide me. but i do not have lot of friends from the fraternity. i have grown up with a certain set of people and i prefer to hang out with them. huma and me talk about everything. more than siblings we are close friends. she knows what is happening in my life and i know exactly what is happening in her life.”
