US to Deploy 20 Marine Brigades if N. Korea Invades

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) r/>Washington May 07 - The United States has set up a plan to mobilize some 20 Marine Corps brigades in the event of a war on the Korean Peninsula according to Korea's (KBS WORLD) website.

US House Armed Service Committee Chairman Howard McKeon unveiled the plan during a debate in Washington on the National Defense Authorization Act for next year KBS WORLD reported.

McKeon announced Tuesday that US Marine Corps Commandant General James Amos said 20 Marine Corps brigades would be deployed to the Korean Peninsula if the North invaded the South. McKeon said Amos made the remark after he was asked about war plans regarding the Korean Peninsula.

However some observers have questioned the reality of the plan as the overall size of the Marine Corps is expected to be reduced to 21 brigades in line with federal budget cuts.
