(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Iran's relations with GCC countries are "excellent" and progressing," Assistant Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian said Tuesday.

Abdollahian made the remarks to Iranian Satellite Station (Alalam), adding that strengthening ties with neighboring countries is a key component of Iran foreign policy.

The Iranian diplomat noted that there are exchange of "positive" signals between Tehran and Riyadh, mainly at the political and diplomatic levels.

On another topic, Abdollahian hailed the outcome of Iraqi parliamentary elections, citing the high turnout which he described as reflecting ability of the government, Iraqi security and military forces to impose security in the country.

The official said such wide participation in the Iraqi election came as a rejection to terrorism and "to say no to foreign interference in Iraq's internal affairs." The Iranian official expressed hope that such outcome would help achieve more stability and security to an important country in the region.

Abdollahian denied that his country interferred in Iraq's internal affairs, stressing that Iran has "a moral influence in the region, including in Iraq, and this influence is due to historic, cultural, and religious common grounds between the two countries."
