(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar Foundation (QF) yesterday celebrated Convocation 2014 with the highest number of graduates in Foundation's history in a range of diversified subjects at a ceremony graced by H H the Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser.
A total of 554 students graduated this year from Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) member of QF's partner universities and graduate colleges in subjects in a range of diversified subjects including computer science, design, Islamic studies, engineering, international relations and medicine at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC). The graduates represent 222 Qatari students and others from 23 different countries.
The students received rings from Dr Abdulla bin Ali Al Thani, President of HBKU and Vice President of Education at Qatar Foundation before they did the traditional walk through the 'Door to the Future,' symbolising their passage from HBKU partner universities to the next stage of their lives.
Dr Al Thani in his welcome address said: "Movements like these are crystallising how our educational programmes are reflecting the needs of the society and its aspirations. Year by year the number of our talented graduates at convocation is growing and so in the range of specialisation."
"Strong partnership with other universities and collaboration in research will enable further growth of the country. International research hubs and HBKU will stand together to achieve more progress in education," he added.
Wendy Kopp, Chief Executive Officer of 'Teach For All' in herkeynote speech called upon the graduates to support the world to overcome the challenge in providing quality education for children.
"I challenge you to become the game changers," she said.
The graduates at 'Convocation 14' included 80 from Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, 105 from Texas A&M University at Qatar, 30 from 30 Northwestern University-Qatar, 62 from Virginia Commonwealth University Qatar, and others from Weill Cornell Medical College€Qatar, Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar, HEC Paris in Qatar and UCL College- Qatar. Five students from HBKU's Translation and Interpreting Institute (TII) and 76 students from Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies (QFIS), make up HBKU's graduating class this year.
A variety of degrees were conferred upon HBKU's first graduating class of Master of Arts in Translation Studies; Master of Arts in Islamic Studies in Contemporary Fiqh; Master of Arts in Islamic Studies in Comparative Religions; Master of Arts in the Study of Contemporary Muslim Thought and Societies; Master of Arts in Public Policy in Islam; Master of Science in Islamic Finance; Diploma in Public Policy in Islam; and Diploma in Islamic Finance.
Each university and graduate college has its own graduation ceremony, but Convocation 2014'brought together every graduating student from across Education City, including both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
The high-profile graduation ceremony was also attended by H E Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, Vice Chairperson of Qatar Foundation; Engineer Saad Al Muhannadi, President of Qatar Foundation; Engineer Jassim Telefat, Group Executive Director of Qatar Foundation Capital Projects and Facilities Management; and Fahad Saad Al Qahtani, Group Executive Director of Qatar Foundation Administration.
