Private schools in Oman to have security officers to handle emergencies

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The Ministry of Education (MoE) has decided to have trained 'security officers' in all private schools to handle emergency situations and accompany students on school buses.

To begin with, selected teachers will be trained by civil defence and ROP personnel on how to act in situations like fires and accidents. Specialised personnel will be added to this team later. MoE is working on a training programme that will cover basic emergency drills and day to day safety aspects.

''A school is a place where it is all about children, and security is top priority. So we have decided to train some of the teachers in each school in handling any emergency. Other officials will certainly join later, but awareness and training can do wonders in the event of an emergency,'' Fatma Abdul Abbas Noorani, director general of private schools in MoE, said.

Select teachers in every private school will be made to go through rescue drills, and taught first aid, driving and defence tactics.

''This is a practical solution. Teachers can be trained to be  security officers who will be there for the children. Children too will have faith in them. The effort is to make the entire system self-reliant. Looking at our plan, this should happen soon,'' Fatma said.

Besides training, there will be awareness campaigns on how to handle emergencies. They will include workshops and talks with the participation of children.<
