Saudi- NSHR lauds media role in resolving grievances

(MENAFN - Arab News) High-ranking official at the national society for human rights (nshr) has asserted that some government departments fail to address grievances until the media exposes them.saleh al-khathlan vice president of the nshr made these statements to a local daily on monday while praising the role various media outlets are playing as whistleblowers.in this context al-khathlan observed 'some government agencies respond quicker to the concerns of citizens and residents when the media highlights their stories which underlines the shortcomings in these departments. the role of the media in monitoring government agencies and advocating for citizens' rights is much appreciated and is in line with its social responsibilities." 'we need to activate and expand the role of monitoring bodies and establish measures to supervise the performance of government agencies in an integrated approach that ensures transparency" he added.statistics revealed by the nshr showed that the number of complaints registered with the body regarding administrative issues reached 794 in 2013 including 692 cases concerning saudis. the study also indicated that there was a 3 percent decline this year in the number of complaints logged with the nshr and the saudi capital accounted for the highest number of grievances.
