Council of Europe Ministers Meet to Discuss Ukraine

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) r/>Vienna May 06 -The Ukraine crisis figured high on meeting held here Tuesday by some 30 foreign ministers of the Council of Europe . The meeting was attended by the representatives of Russia and Ukraine Sergei Lavrov and Andrei Deshchitsa.

The talks which were aimed at reaching a solution that would assist in calming the tension in eastern Ukraine failed to reach their goal due to the disparity amongst the sides.

Russian foreign minister Lavrov had earlier sat down to talks with Deshchitsa in Geneva which held alongside US Secretary of State John Kerry and EU Foreign Policy chief Catherine Ashton earlier in mid-April.

According to local media the Austrian foreign minister had held a closed door meeting with his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts aimed at bridging the gaps between them ahead of the talks scheduled today.

Lavrov had reiterated his Russia's demands for Ukraine to carry out a comprehensive constitutional reform and for the Council of Europe to assume an investigation into human rights breaches Moscow insists were carried out by the new Ukrainian administration on pro-Russians in eastern Ukraine.
