(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) British GT Championship leaders Ahmad al Harthy and Michael Caine combined to put their Oman Racing Team's Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3 in sixth fastest qualifying time on Sunday for the two-hour British GT Championship race at Rockingham, UK.

Ahmad's quickest lap, 1m24.224s, was just one-tenth of a second shy of Caine's best (1m23.852s).

With both drivers so evenly matched, the combined time of 2m48.360s took them to the third row of the grid at the Northamptonshire venue.

Ecurie Ecosse's driver combination of Marco Attard and Alexander Sims, driving a BMW Z4 GT3, proved unbeatable in qualifying as they led their respective halves of the half hour session to claim pole position by more than a second.

The session brought the first use of the series' revised qualifying format for the longer races with the best laps of each driver being added together to create an aggregate time which goes towards forming the grid.

With each of the Oman Racing Team drivers allocated a 15-minute period each in two qualifying rounds in which to post their best times, the fastest laps of each were then combined to determine the starting position. The combined time of the Oman Racing Team was just 0.3 seconds shy of the front row.

''We managed to do a decent job with the combined qualifying, my lap time was the best I had done all weekend, so I'm pretty happy with where we are on the grid,'' said Ahmad.

''I'm pleased with how we've taken the car forward and really happy with the set-up we've been working on.

''Rockingham is completely different to Oulton Park, so we're expecting a harder race than we had during the first round. I'm always confident, though, and I know our race performance will be strong, so I'm really looking forward to seeing what Michael and I can achieve.''

Ahmad and team-mate Caine hold a one-point lead at the top of the British GT standings after a memorable victory and a seventh place finish at Oulton Park last month.

The Oman Racing Team also leads the team championship with 31 points after two rounds.
