Death Toll Rises to 12 in Colombia Mine Collapse


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Bogota May 05 - The death toll in the collapse of an illegal gold mine in Colombia rose to 12 the daily El Colombiano reported Monday.

Five women were among the dead in the Agualimpia mine in Santander de Quilichao in the south-western Colombian province of Cauca while four miners remained missing. The search was ongoing but rescue teams noted that there was virtually no hope of finding more survivors.

Illegal mining is not only dangerous but puts Colombia's economic growth and natural resources at risk Vice President Angelino Garzon told radio network Caracol on Sunday.

The accident Thursday came four weeks after four miners died in an explosion at an illegal gold mine in the western Colombian province of Antioquia.
