(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) The defeated tamil tiger terrorist group continues to use its international contacts and the large tamil diaspora in north america europe and asia to procure weapons communications funding and other needed supplies said the united states.

issuing its country reports on terrorism 2013 the us state department stated that “there have been no known attacks in sri lanka that could verifiably be attributed to the ltte (liberation tigers of tamil ealam) since the end of the war but ltte’s financial network of support continued to operate throughout 2013.”

“despite its military defeat at the hands of the sri lankan government in 2009 the ltte’s international network of sympathisers and financial support persists” it said.

in its report the united states said that the ltte — or the tamil tigers as they are better known — employed charities as fronts to collect and divert funds for their activities. the report also said that tamil tiger members and supporters are operating in sri lanka as well as in india.

in may 2009 sri lankan government forces defeated the last tamil tiger fighting forces killing tir leader velupillai prabhakaran and other members of the terrorist leadership and declared military victory over the group.

in a recent bid to thwart the resurgence of the terrorist outfit which was responsible for three decades of bloodshed and loss of over 100000 lives the sri lankan government banned 16 diaspora groups and 424 of their members as terrorist organisations.

despite the united state’s recognition of the tamil tigers as one of the “deadliest terrorist organisations” in world history the us has ignored the lankan government’s ban.

last month the sri lankan police shot down three tamil men the government listed as tamil tiger operatives trying to revive the terrorist outfit in sri lanka with the help of diaspora funds and support.

in the report the united sates criticised sri lanka’s search for terrorists saying that it “extended well beyond its utility and expanded to target legitimate political opponents of the government.” — news?khaleejtimes.com
