civil defence authorities from ajman dubai and sharjah were trying to bring the fire under control even at noon when khaleej times visited the spot. the fire gutted the office of a tyre trading company called al aly tyres trading establishment.

other shop owners in the area said the gutted company was established over 10 years ago and serviced trucks and big motor vehicles. police and civil defence officials on site did not comment on how the fire took place and said a thorough investigation is required to ascertain the cause of the fire.

the street was cordoned off by the police and neighboring shop owners said they suffered a day’s loss in business. the street was filled with debris and was engulfed with acrid smoke from burning tyres.

rafeeq m the owner of a nearby eatery said: “the fire started in the early hours of the morning. the reason it took so long to control the fire was probably because the building in question is an old one.”

another eyewitness anil k a worker at a nearby auto spare parts workshop said: “our business has suffered for a day and getting in and out of the area has also become a nightmare due to the traffic congestion.”

traffic snarls

traffic snarls were reported around the area during the morning rush hour. commuters who took the industrial area route to dubai said they were stuck in traffic for several hours.

anil gopalan a resident of abu shagarah said: “i left for work at 6.45am and reached my office at 10.30am. there was a bumper to bumper traffic. there were times when i just switched my car off because i figured there was no point in wasting fuel.”

dolly gir a teacher and another resident who was stuck in traffic in the afternoon hours said: “the school bus left the school at 1.45pm and we usually reach home by 2.20pm; today i got home at 3pm.”
