First batch of athletes set to arrive in Doha today

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The first of several star athletes featuring in the season opening race of the 14-stop IAAF Diamond League meet will start arriving today, Qatar Athletics Federation (QAF) confirmed yesterday. "The athletes, a few of them, will start arriving in Doha by Monday and a large number of them will be here by Tuesday," QAF Secretary-General, Mohamed Jassem Al Kuwari, said after a couple sponsorship deals here yesterday. The list includes a galaxy of World Champions and Olympic winners who will be seen in action at Qatar Sports Club Stadium on May 9, in both the men's and women's section. The IAAF Diamond League encompasses 32 individual Event Disciplines, with a points scoring 'Diamond Race' which runs throughout the 14 meeting series. Winners of each Diamond Race will get a Diamond Trophy, a cash prize, a wild card for the IAAF World Championships (certain conditions apply) but more importantly, will have shown season long consistency to earn the unchallenged honour of being the World Number 1. Al Kuwari said almost all the preparations for hosting of the event have been complete. "We are happy to say that almost 95 percent organisational work has been finished. The organizing committee meetings are held on a regular basis to review the work," the QAF official said. Meanwhile, QAF signed two partnership agreement with two major sponsors, Aspetar , the orthopedic and Sports medicine Hospital and MSC, a Multi Services Company for advanced technologies. Speaking at the signing president of QAF and Chairman of the IDI Doha 2014 organising committee, Dahlan Al Hamad said: "As we head towards the kick-off IAAF Diamond league meeting in Doha, with less than five days still ahead of us, we proudly announce this agreement with two more major sponsors, Aspetar and MSC." He added: "The IDI Doha 2014 which, as always, brings this season as well the sport's leading names for a fantastic night of athletics action at Qatar Sports Club Stadium on May 9, is welcoming our sponsors on board. I feel positive about this new partnership, as I strongly believe it will turn out to be just the introduction of a fruitful and successful long future cooperation," the QAF president said. Director General of Aspetar, Dr Khalifa Jehan Al Kuwari and MSC General Manager Labid Aljundo, were also present for the press conference.
