Saudi- Maid crisis likely to be over soon

(MENAFN - Arab News) The ministry of labor expects to sign final contracts with the indonesian and indian governments this month which would end the domestic worker shortage crisis in the kingdom a senior ministry official said recently.

once the unified contracts are signed the ministry would start issuing visas for domestic workers said deputy labor minister mufrej al-haqbani.

the kingdom has had a shortage of domestic workers for three years. the situation worsened when the government banned all recruitment from ethiopia because of crimes committed by some of that country's workers.

al-haqbani said the ministry is communicating with the indian and indonesian authorities to sign the unified labor contracts this month.

he said an indonesian delegation was supposed to have arrived in jeddah this week to give the finishing touches to the contract but had to delay its visit due to certain circumstances.

he said the labor ministry has contacted the ministry of foreign affairs to help organize the visits of the two delegations.

al-haqbani said the indonesian government would decide on the wages and recruitment costs for their workers.

al-haqbani meanwhile confirmed a report that the police acting on instructions from the labor ministry had arrested an expatriate and two accomplices for allegedly trying to bribe an official for visas in riyadh.

he thanked the ministry of interior and the police for their cooperation and professionalism in handling the case. he said the government was determined to clamp down on corruption.

the ministry would release details of the case after investigations are completed he said.
