(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) As an environmentally pro-active organisation, Bank Sohar has been highlighting awareness on minimising the wastage of precious resources for the benefit of our country and future generations.
With this goal in mind and as summer approaches, the Bank is sharing tips on how you can save money whilst conserving energy by purchasing the right air-conditioner. In a country like Oman where summers can be very hot, having an AC in every room is essential. However, air-conditioning units place a heavy load on energy consumption and as a result can be expensive to run.
This is why purchasing the correct air-conditioning is crucial “ doing so can have a two-fold benefit of saving both; energy and running costs. The key to achieving this goal is to purchase the correctly sized air-conditioning unit for your room, and ideally one with an Energy Star' certification to achieve maximum efficiency.
Munira Abdulnabi Macki, DGM human resource and corporate support at Bank Sohar noted, ''Buying a bigger air conditioner won't necessarily make you feel more comfortable during the hot summer months. In fact, an air-conditioner that's too big for the room or area could actually perform less efficiently than a smaller, correctly sized unit.
Therefore, purchasing the right unit with the right specifications may prove more beneficial which is why it is important to know the proper Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) rating on the AC of your choice before making a purchase.'' The EER of any AC unit is calculated as the cooling capacity divided by the electrical power required to operate the unit (higher the number, the better).
Most average units have an EER of nine or ten. Any unit above ten is considered extremely efficient, while the best and most efficient units rate at a minimum of 12. Furthermore, manufacturers are required by law to list the energy rating on the unit, making it very easy for consumers to make an informed purchase.
The Energy Star Program was created by the US Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency to reward and recognise the most efficient appliances on the market, including air-conditioners by placing the Energy Star logo on the actual unit. To achieve this rating, the air-conditioning unit should be certified to be at least 15 per cent more efficient than those meeting the minimum standards and are therefore expected to have an EER of at least 9.8 and above.
At the beginning of the year, Bank Sohar launched their annual calendar bearing the theme Saving Water, Electricity and Our Planet' which highlights the impact of daily water and electricity consumption on the environment and provides 12 easy tips for energy efficient livi
